I'm a big fan of bold patterned papers.  However, sometimes, I love the pattern, but don't like how "busy" it is all together.  A great way to get some of that boldness, but keep the layout rather simple, is to cut it up and use the different patterned pieces as embellishments/accents on your page.    Don't be afraid of using foam tape or pop dots to really make those cut up patterns "jump" off your page.  It adds energy and vibrance and, yes,  still "flattens" enough to fit into page protectors!
